Giants of Global Pulses Trade: Import Guide for Red Lentils and Chickpeas
As the global population grows and demand for plant-based protein reaches record levels, the pulses sector has become the most strategic player in food trade. Especially Red Lentils and Chickpeas are defined as the "Food of the Future" due to their cost-effectiveness and high nutritional value.
As Nefis Agro, we process pulses sourced from Turkey's fertile lands and the world's best harvest regions in our high-tech facilities in Gaziantep and export them to over 25 countries. So, what should you look for when importing these products?
1. Red Lentils: Football or Split?
The most common mistake importers make is choosing a lentil type not suitable for the intended use. In the Nefis Agro production line, lentils are divided into two main forms:
- Red Football Lentils: Whole lentils that are hulled and polished (with oil or water). Preferred in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. They stand out on market shelves with their shiny appearance.
- Red Split Lentils: Lentils that are hulled and then split in half. Ideal for making soups as they cook very quickly and thicken easily. This is the most demanded type in the European market.
| Moisture | Max 14% |
| Foreign Matter | Max 0.1% (Sortex Cleaned) |
| Broken Ratio | Max 1% - 2% |
| Caliber | 3mm - 4mm+ |
2. Chickpeas: Caliber (Size) is Everything
In chickpea trade, the most important factor determining the price is "Caliber" (diameter in mm). As Nefis Agro, we sort into 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, and larger sizes according to our customers' requests.
While 7-8mm is generally preferred for hummus production, 9mm and larger "Jumbo" sizes are preferred for packaged retail sales and luxury restaurants. Laser sorters in our production line remove not only size-defective but also discolored (dark) chickpeas, ensuring 99.9% uniformity in the sack.
Logistics and Packaging Solutions
Pulses are sensitive to moisture. Therefore, using "Desiccants" and choosing the right packaging is vital in export shipments. Our 25kg/50kg PP sacks allow air circulation, while our 1kg/5kg retail packs feature barrier properties to extend shelf life.
